GDC Poonch came into existence in 1955 situated in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir and it considered one of the prestigious college in the state. Sited in Tehsil Haveli, adjacent to the bus stand, this affiliated college was established more than six decades ago. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council recognizes this college; GDC Poonch has a plethora of choices for students interested in undergraduate programmes in different fields. The college occupies a thirty-seven-point-eighteen acres area, an adequate space for majoring in academics and personal growth.

The GDC Poonch has all the modern teaching tools and gadgets to make learning as effective as possible for its learners. An up to date library is well stocked with over forty five thousand books while the reading room take subscriptions to twenty magazines, newspapers, and journals. Based on sport tiles, the campus has a large playground with a hall for indoor games to be played including hockey, football, volley ball and athletics. The college also has functional laboratories for practical sessions in the teaching of science subjects. In this regard, GDC Poonch has establishment of different hostels for boys and girls, due to socialization of students coming from far off places. An auditorium for event and seminars, A gymnasium for the athletic people and a canteen that is the busiest place for most of the students.

The college currently has 15 undergraduate courses spread over four programmes of study. All programmes are degree programmes and offer both theoretical pro foundation and practical experience in the respective fields. The college has many combinations in the B.Sc programme including, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Zoology, Physics and Mathematics, and others that include Geology, Geography and Biotechnology. The combined intake quota for students, post and undergraduate, remains at an able 2,468 on total, a figure that is an index to the faculties’ goal of delivering quality education to the highest number of students possible. Turning to the matter of students, in the academic year 2022, the college has total students of 1,902, this reveals the demand for the college in the society and the confidence the community has put in the college.

The admission procedure of the Government Degree College, Poonch is merit base that is as per the Higher Education Department, University of Jammu norms. The intake capacity of the college is very adherent to the fixed intake capacity for the different streams and combination of subjects. Applicants have to fill in their applications, and send copies of their documents to the admission office, the most important criteria being the scores they obtain in the qualifying examinations.
