The Government Institute of Teacher Education (Women), Palakkad was set up in 1923 is one of the oldest standalone institute catering to the purpose of educating prospective teachers. This women only institution is situated at Ambikapuram, Palakkad, Kerala, and has been influencing the development of teacher education programmes for nearly a hundred years. The institute is located in a sprawling 2-acre complex and offers all courses under its umbrella approved by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). This has a total student enrolment of 60 students and has a faculty of 4 thereby providing a one on one environment for learning. At present, the institute provides only one course which is the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) consonant with the institute’s focus on primary schooling.
Government Institute of Teacher Education has several facilities to support learning much as it looks forward to improving the conveniences provided to the students. There is a equipped library in the campus asemblage where students avail abundant literatures for their education. For providing instructional experiences and skills development, the institute requires departmental laboratories. An auditorium is used for occasions, lectures, conferences, cultural activities, and other activities enhancing life within a university. The institute also focuses on students’ health issues and therefore provides a gym for the students. Since the college acknowledges incorporation of technology in todays courses, it has provided adequate computer facilities whereby the students will be ready to meet the technological aspect in teaching.
The Government Institute of Teacher Education (Women), located in Palakkad aims at providing value added education through its regular full-time course in Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed). This is a two-year course with aims being to produce qualified teachers in the primary school teaching fraternity. As of the programme mentioned above, the institute has an approved intake of only 50 intakes to meet the increasing requirement of elementary school teachers. Such a specialised emphasis enables the institute to dedicate all its efforts and faculty capacity towards training outstanding practitioners for the formative age levels of education.

The admission criterion involves selection tests conducted by the institution or a common admission examination popular known as the higher secondary (10+2) or equivalent examination.
