Punalur, Kollam District, Kerala, the Government Polytechnic College was started in the year 1998 is one of the leading technical college. As an affiliated college recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICT; this institution provides education in various fields of engineering. The institute is located on a 13.3 acres of campus that comprises a total student intake of 512 and a faculty strength of 21. About diploma programmes the college offers three which focus on distinct branches of engineering. GC, Punalur is the great light for technical education in the region as the college has been providing best education in technical fields and best infrastructure.

The institute also boasts of providing a number of amenities to ensure that the learners have optimum experience in their learning process. The well equipped library is an information centre catering both technical and non technical books, periodicals, magazines and journals. From 9am to 4pm from Monday to Friday and from 9 am to 2pm on Saturday students are able to study comfortably in the reading area. In college, faculty utilises new facilities having state of the art equipment that enhance practical learning in the colleges. For co-curricular activities the college has sport section to enhance the participation of students in sporting activities, and a gym in order to befit the body. An auditorium have been arranged to accommodate various events and seminar which enhances the student activities. It serves refreshment to both students and staff and is simply known as the school canteen. 

Female students are offered hostel accommodation since the college ensures that students live in secure and comfortable facilities. The institute also has health centre which provides fist aide intending to provide student the best care possible. Well equipped with in IT requirements, the college is a step ahead in embracing technology and in the processes of teaching and learning the students are smarter and fit to tackle the world.

Government Polytechnic College, Punalur has three full time diploma courses and all the three courses duration is for three years. Such programmes are offered depending on various branches of engineering giving the learners many choices of careers. The overall capacity that has been approved for all courses is 180 students and the Maktab course takes 60 students. This produces an idea of fair student faculty ration that favours learning and quality tutor-student relations. The courses are academic as well as skills-based, to equip the learners for the reality of the world they are to face upon their entrance into the world market.

In the admission process at Government Polytechnic College, Punalur, college prefers the candidate with more merit. Unfortunately, details about the admission process are not available, yet many polytechnic colleges of Kerala prefer the marks scored in the qualifying exam, that is, 10th standard.
