Government Polytechnic College is a technical college situated at Kattuvannanjur Village Sankarapuram was started in 2013. This affiliated college which operates under the All India Council for Technical Education offers diploma programmes in engineering disciplines. Lying on a spacious land area of 10.33 acres, the college today has a total strength of the students of 830 and it has a faculty of 32 members. It offers a wide range of programmes- five full-time diploma programmes and five lateral entry options for various engineering disciplines.

Government Polytechnic College is fully aware of the importance of putting in place effective facilities that will enhance learning atmosphere among students. That is why it provides the students with the necessary number of facilities promoting their academic and personal developments. The campus has computers and communication engineering laboratories for practice sessions in computer science engineering and electronics. For those students who have no accommodation the college offers hostel for both males and females. Most of the boys hostel from the most backward class welfare department provide free lodging and boarding to 100 students a paid one accommodates 80 students. A girls’ hostel provides the girls with living facilities that are comfortable for female students. 

Government Polytechnic College Sankarapuram offers a total of 10 programmes for which all programme offered for diploma courses are full time. These are five 3-academic year diploma programmes in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering. Further, the college offers five 2-year lateral entry programmes in the same fields of speciality. Each specialisation has 60 available seats and the total approved intake per the regular diploma courses is 300. For the lateral entry programmes the college has 6 seats in each discipline, and thus there are 30 seats of lateral entry.
