Government Polytechnic College, Sevvapet, (GPC Sevvapet) is aspirational college was established in the year 2017 in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. This affiliated college which is approved for AICTE offers diploma courses in different disciplines of engineering. Situated on a compact 9.36-acre campus, GPC Sevvapet has a total student intake of 254 and maintains a faculty-to-student ratio of 1:254. Currently, the college provides five diploma courses, all of which are full time programmes preparing engineers for the region.

To cater the needs of the students Government Polytechnic College has setup several facilities to meet the the needs of the students both educationally and otherwise. The college provides proper laboratory facilities for each department, which offers practical experience, essential for technical educations. A modern concept of a library implies the availability of references for academic work and personal investigation. The campus also provides for an event calendar in the form of an auditorium for events and seminars within the campus making it more lively academically. Camping to students physical needs, sporting amenities are provided for balanced education. IT systems in the college focuses on providing great connectivity and other learning resources to the students. Facilities for feeding is provided on campus through a cafeteria that caters for the diet needs of the students and staff; whereas health needs of the students and staff are well taken care by a health center that houses first aid services. For visitors, the college has offered guest room facilities because of its hospitality.

Total diploma programmes offered by the institute is five, and all the courses are full time programmes, the duration of each being three years. These programmes encompass general sectors of engineering whereby students acquire sound base in their respective fields of specialisation. The college provides Diploma courses in Mechanical, Civil, Computer Engineering etc. The college is thus approved to intake 300 students overall across all the courses it offers to help hone a large number of aspiring engineers each year. Although enrolment and graduation statistics are nothing mentioned, the business model based on practical training and use of current knowledge intends to provide skilled technicians that are adaptive to the job market.

Admissions at Government Polytechnic College, Sevvapet are, apparently, made relatively easy and absolutely hassle free. As for some particulars concerning the admission procedure, nothing is said, though it remains common for the polytechnic colleges across Tamil Nadu to admit students on the foundation of their performance in the 10 th standard or any other equivalent examination. It is believed that the college operates under the existing admission procedures as laid down by the Directorate of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu. Prospective students are therefore encouraged to follow the college’s communication calendar for the exact time that the applications will be submitted and when admissions will be made. This author has however understood that GPC Sevvapet being a government institution may be offering these education at relative reasonable and affordable price that most aspiring engineers may afford. However, details of existing scholarships or well-known alumni are not yet known at the time.
