Government Polytechnic for women is a premiere technical institution which was set up in the year of 1984 at Kandaghat. This is possibly the only all-women polytechnic in Himachal Pradesh, established in the beautiful town of Kandaghat. It is a government approved affiliated college Campus run by the government of West Bengal sprawling over a 5.18 acre area at Dankuni, under Hooghly District as GPWK or Hooghly Pharmaceutical College. The total enrolment of the institute is 344 students and the faculty of the institute is 26 so the institute provides a good learning atmosphere for the those students who want to be technicians and pharmacists.
Government Polytechnic for women boast of offering a number of facilities to warrant a favourable learning environment for all the learners of the institute. The campus has three neat hostels for out-station students comprising of Sarojini Hostel of 90 seats, Renuka Hostel fifty seats and Saraswati Hostel fifty seats. Information technology: All libraries are fully computerised; a knowledge centre stocked with books, magazines, journals, and multimedia that support the different courses is available. As for medical problems, there are first-aid facilities in every department of the building. It also has provisions of canteen facility and transportation, available parking area and even has a branch of UCO bank that functions like an extension counter.
As a whole, GPWK has a total of three full time diploma courses which prepares students in respective technical disciplines. The institute offers five programmes and admits up to 160 students in its programmes combined. Out of the above mentioned courses, two diploma courses are Diploma in Computer Engineering which is and Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering : Both of these courses are of 3 year duration and the intake capacity of each of these courses is 60. The third one is D.Pharma (Diploma in Pharmacy) under which the college offers 40 seats for the students and it is a two years course. These courses are intended to give practical ideas and theory, and ensure that learners are well informed in their occupations.
Government Polytechnic for Women, Kandaghat follows a proper admission procedure and admission is mostly through merit. The admission process of the engineering diploma courses made purely on the basis of the Polytechnic Admission Test (PAT) conducted by H.P. Takniki Shiksha Board at Dharamshala. If some seats are still empty after the first two rounds then candidates having no merit listed in PAT can register for the third round of counseling online. These remaining seats are then filled by candidates who have obtained at least fifty percent marks in the minimum entry level qualification prescribed by the AICTE, forty five percent in case of SC/ ST/ OBC category. This also make sure the institute continues to produce quality students, as well as opening doors for deserving students who could not make it through the PAT.
