The Government Polytechnic, Kinnaur, the college was established in 2013 and affiliated to Himachal Pradesh university located in Kalpa. This technical institution approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), is currently offering diploma courses in engineering specialties. The institute has been set up with an intake capacity of 203 students and 7 faculty members thus offering an optimized learning-teaching interaction. At present the Government Polytechnic, Kinnaur provides two B.Tech. level full time diploma programs that covers duration of three years both in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The focus of the institute is technical education and several programs for these courses have been developed to meet the market needs.

Many amenities are available in the college to enrich the learning process of students they include; A library stocked with the latest books not only provides limbs of knowledge, but departmental laboratories gives practical knowledge needed for technical training. The campus boasts an events and seminar auditorium, keeping with the liveliness of academic life at the institution. To facilitate the students, the institute provide transportation and canteen for students in case they need a quick meal. 

Taking an appropriate consideration of people’s health and well-being, there is a medical centre offering first aid. It also provides good IT facilities; as we know that now days technical college is incomplete without good IT facilities. Students have an opportunity to develop their physical abilities through utilizing sport related structures in their development. For instance, the institute avails itself to hostel facilities for the male and female students to ensure that students from distant areas get a comfortable place to stay.

Government Polytechnic, Kinnaur currently offers two diploma programs: As mentioned in the previous section our institute offers the courses such as: Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. By design, both courses are three-year full-time degree courses. Currently the institute has an approved student capacity to admit an average of 60 students for each course thus enabling an admission of 120 students for the two courses. These courses are thought to equip students with a sound knowledge area and skills within their disciplines and ready them to serve the technical world or to pursue higher education in engineering.

The criteria of admission to this college starts from the merit list and it has a proper procedure to follow for it. All aspiring students must produce valid PAT mean score administered by HPTSB (Himachal Pradesh Technical Service Board) Dharamsala. This test evaluates the candidates that willing to enroll them in technical colleges and Universities. 

The PAT is normally conducted once a year and the students are urged to visit the website of the HPTSB in order to ascertain the dates and the procedure for application. The freshmen’s intake is usually done in the months prior to the start of the academic year in July or August.
