The Himachal Pradesh Government Dental College and Hospital is a premier dental education college located at Shimla the beautiful city of Himachal Pradesh and started from 1994. This affiliated college having Dental Council of India (DCI) approval provides many dental courses within its five-acre campus. The college actually has a very small number of students with a total enrolment of 332 students and a faculty strength of 44 which allows the college to uphold a very small student faculty ratio. The institute teachs 11 courses across three degree levels and has specialisation in different fields of dentistry. Notably, the college boasts a diverse student body with a female-to-male ratio of 2.57:1, as has been earlier shown, due to its policies of gender equality in the education of dentists.
Himachal Pradesh Government Dental College and Hospital makes available virtually every facility that any College can offer to its students to enhance learning. The campus also incorporates a library well-stocked with the collection of dental literature and most recent research information. The college has facilities that the girls can use to get a better living standard as aspiring female dentists, including the girls’ hostel. The institution also possesses contemporary Information Technology facilities; students can learn about new extraordinary technological advances in dental studies. The facilities in the college enable those interested in sports cause to engage in their sporting activities in a bid to achieve the balance between education and health. There is a food court within the college compound that provides quality and appropriate meals for both students and members of staff, also there is a gym facility which promotes the health’s of the college community.
The total dental courses being offered are diverse and focus on the levels of dental education and training in Himachal Pradesh Government Dental College and Hospital. Currently the institute offers 11 full-fledged courses which are undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma in various fields. The largest course is the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) which takes 75 students per year, however, teh college also offers a number of Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) specialisations with less number of intakes. Besides, the college offers diploma courses in Dental Hygienist and Dental Mechanics with an admission capacity of twenty students each. The total entry was to 332 students cutting across all the programmes offered, and this was done with the belief that the college will continue to have quality education, due to the controlled admission capacity for every class.
The general procedure followed by Himachal Pradesh Government Dental College and Hospital for admission is by means of scores obtained in the All India entrance examinations. In general, for BDS programme admissions are done though NEET and for MDS programmes admissions are done though NEET MDS. Standardised tests provide an equal and competitive basis for admission of potential students to dentistry. Students can also get scholarship in the college through the statistics of the academic year 2021 that showed that out of 330 students, only 14 of them received some sort of reimbursement for their college expenses. Such commitment helps in ensuring that quality dental education is offered at fair cost and to those who meet the recognition deserved.
