IIBAT or International Institute of Biotechnology and Toxicology is a self financed institute that was established at Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu in 1978. This co-educational institution situated in Shanmuga Nagar, Padappai is noted to pioneer biotechnology and toxicology research for the last 40 years. IIBAT also provides many focused doctoral courses for those learners interested in developing their expertise in some of the most urgent scientific disciplines. These positions are evident from the calendar of courses offered by the institute in various disciplines within biotechnology as well as related sciences.
The IIBAT has many infrastructure facilities that are well suited for complicated researches and learning methods. The institute has well-equipped laboratory amenities as it aims to give practical experience for the students depending on their specific courses. A library, in this case, is well stocked with a central aim of providing the needed knowledge as students engage in academia. The campus has well developed IT facilities necessary for students to equip their research work through modern technologies. The cafeteria can provide students with a comfortable place for eating. The institute has an auditorium with many events and seminars where students can active the academic sessions in the campus. There is adequate parking space for both teaching and non-teaching staff as well as students thereby students do not experience the difficulties of getting parking space.
At present, the institute has seven full time doctorate programmes, and they are all under the PhD degree category. They include Ph.D. in Toxicology, Ecotoxicology, Analytical Chemistry, Entomology, Pathology, Agronomy and Ancillary Ph.D. Each of these courses takes six years to complete so that enough research is done and the students get to study the subject fully. On this reason, as an institute of doctoral degrees, clear commitment towards increasing knowledge in biotechnology and producing highly qualified professional specialised in specific sub-disciplines of biotech and related sciences.
The admission process of the IIBAT’s programme is so created to admit only those candidates who have bright academic record and research aptitude. Factors such as the student’s performance in the previous degrees, the proposed research topics, as well as entrance tests, or interviews are taken into consideration in the Ph.D. programmes.

International Institute of Biotechnology and Toxicology operates from Kancheepuram (Tamil Nadu), and it is a reputed institute for biotechnology and toxicology research, IIBAT since then has worked toward the betterment of scientific education and research for more than four decades. The institutes select for their graduate programs specific candidates who hold strong academic backgrounds and who show a genuine aptitude for research in specialized frontiers of biotechnology and related sciences. IIBAT offers seven full-time doctorate programs, or in-house Ph.D.s, all taking the duration of six years. These programs are intended to provide in-depth knowledge and research opportunities into very specific subject sub-disciplines of biotechnology and other related sciences.
IIBAT follows a procedure to select the very best candidates out of a broader pool focusing on academic performance in previous degrees, topics regarding proposed research, and performance either through entrance test or interview. The eligibility criteria for IIBAT depend on the fast track to earn a Ph.D. in an area of research. Candidates need mainly a master's degree in the relevant fields of study with a very strong academic history in prior degree documentation where most programs would expect at least 55% marks or equivalent CGPA in the qualifying examination. Some programs may have further subject-specific requirements or show a liking for candidates possessing prior research experience.
Application Process
The application process of doctoral programs at the International Institute of Biotechnology and Toxicology was designed to fairly evaluate the candidates' academic backgrounds, research potentials, and aptitude to the acclaimed program. The process can be divided into the following steps:
1. Program Selection: Candidates should carefully review the available Ph.D. programs and select a program that best suits their research interests and academic profile.
2. Online Application: Go to the official website of IIBAT and navigate to the admissions section or Ph.D. programs section. Fill in the online application form with your personal information and academic information accurately.
3. Documents: Prepare and upload the following documents:
4. Application Fee Payment: Application fees must be paid either by debit or credit cards or through the online payment gateway. Fee amounts may differ; check the latest fee structure.
5. Entrance Exam: Depending on the specific program applied for, the entrance examination will be either IIBAT's specific entrance examination or should submit scores in deserving national-level tests. The examination mainly evaluates subject knowledge and research merit.
6. Shortlisting: Based on the review of applications and performance in the entrance exam, IIBAT will shortlist candidates for the next round of the selection process.
7. Interview: The shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview, which may be held either face-to-face or virtually.
Degree wise Admission Process
Ph.D. in Toxicology: This program deals with the study of toxic substances affecting living organisms. Admission will be based on a background in fields that include biology, chemistry, and environmental science. The process would also include an entrance test and an interview that would focus on the candidate's understanding of the principles of toxicology and potential for research.
Ph.D. in Ecotoxicology: This is the study of the ecological effects inflicted by toxic chemicals. Individuals with a solid background in ecology or environmental sciences are encouraged to apply. The admission process will evaluate the research proposal and the applicant's ability to conduct studies in ecological risk assessment.
Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry: This is focused on admitting students with a master's degree in chemistry or closely related disciplines. An entrance examination will be designed to test the analytical skills of candidates along with knowledge of advanced chemical analysis techniques. Candidates will be required to demonstrate laboratory techniques and data interpretation skills.
Ph.D. in Entomology: This Ph.D. is concerned with the study of insects and their relationship with the environment. Admission is granted to Zoologists and Agriculturalists or their equivalents. The selection may evaluate candidates on their knowledge of insect biology and ecology.
Ph.D. in Pathology: This line of study is intended for those candidates who want to study disease processes. The candidates should have a strong foundation in biology or medical sciences. The course of admission may evaluate the candidate's understanding of pathological processes and research methodology.
Ph.D. in Agronomy: This is an appropriate program for candidates studying crop science and soil management. In principle, applicants with a strong ground in agricultural sciences should apply. Examination may consist of assessing a candidate's knowledge of crop production systems and sustainable agriculture practices.
Ph.D. Ancillary: This program may cover interdisciplinary areas related to biotechnology and toxicology. This program is tailored for the specific research area proposed by the candidate and may involve a detailed evaluation of the research proposal and its relevance to IIBAT's research focus.
