The Madras Institute of Technology (MIT Chennai) was founded by Shri. C. Rajam in 1949. In 1978, the college and Anna University amalgamated. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) both grant accreditation to MIT Chennai. The college is connected with Anna University and recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Madras Institute of Technology provides scholarships with the aim of helping financially constrained students in pursuing their dream careers. MIT Chennai scholarships are AICTE Tuition Fee Waiver (TFW) Scheme, Post Matric Scholarship for SC/SCA/ST, Founder’s Family- Financial Assistance to the Deserving Students of 1st Year UG Programme, Sri. K. Rangachariar Memorial Educational Trust Scholarship, Dr. MGR and Thiru Quaid- E-Milleth Endowment Scholarship, etc. Students at Madras Institute of Technology can also avail government scholarships like First Graduate Tuition Fee Concession. To avail Madras Institute of Technology scholarship, candidates have to meet the eligibility criteria. Under the AICTE TFW scheme, candidates should be pursuing B.E/B.Tech form self-financing or government-aided engineering colleges with annual family income less than Rs. 6 lakhs. The Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai imparts advanced-level courses and undertakes research programmes in technical areas. If selected, then the counselling process starts which involves choice filling, seat allotment and admission.
Before the choice selection, an initial amount of Rs 5,000 should be paid through online mode and also a non-refundable counselling fee of Rs 300 (+18% GST) for the general category and SC/ST category. The fee will be adjusted in the tuition fee.
Candidate must download the provisional allotment form and Rs 5,000 receipt from the portal for further procedures.
Once the provisional allotment is confirmed, the candidate can visit the college to pay the remaining fee and confirm the admission fee.

The 2-year M.Sc programme under MIT Chennai PG courses requires graduation (B.Sc) in mathematics or applied science followed by qualifying for an entrance test. A merit list will be prepared based on the scores obtained on the entrance test.

College infrastructure is cool, has many trees in the campus. Located aside the crompet railway station, making easy for transportation. Classrooms are well maintained. Wifi is there, library has enough books.
