The Maruthi college of physical education, Coimbatore founded in 1956 is one of the leading and autonomous college for physical education and sports sciences. This is a co-educational institute situated at Periyanaicken palayam, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, occupying a total area of 8.78 Ac 98 cents. This institute is accredited with NAAC and approved by NCTE which assure the qualities of the education provided. With total student intake of 162 and a faculty of 14 members, the college offers several programmes in physical education right from the Bachelor’s through Master’s, M. Phil., and Doctoral degrees.

Maruthi college of physical education comprises a timely parade of sophisticated amenities expected to bolster learning and the physical development of students. Enclosed within these amenities is a massive sporting area containing play fields for football, basketball, tennis, volley ball, cricket, hockey, hand ball, athletic sports, kho-kho, and Kabaddi. This enclosed hall with four synthetic badminton courts is used also for meetings, cultural activities, indoor games, etc. The students have a good gym to help them in strength training and other fitness activities. The college library boasts over 5700 books and journal subscriptions of twenty two journals to support the students of the various programmes offered within the college. Moreover, the campus is equipped with twelve laboratory facilities, computerised internet connection, and health centre for purposes of medical attendance to the students and faculty.

The courses that is offered at Maruthi College of Physical Education are very extensive in order to fulfil the needs of the future physical education professional. The institute offer five unique programmes of study comprising full-time courses and two part-time courses. These full time courses are B.P.Ed , M.P.Ed M.Phil in Physical Education and Ph.D in Physical Education. However, for the more diverse students, who desire flexible mode of study, the college also has part time Ph.D. in Physical Education. The course in physical education, of Bachelor of Physical Education-B.P.Ed is the basic course for physical education with an approved limit of 100 students while Master of Physical Education M.P.Ed has an intake of 25 students per year. These courses are meant to prepare students for successful, professional careers in physical education and/or coaching and related professions.

The admission of the Maruthi College Of Physical Education involves admission procedures that are meant to admit the most qualified and who have passion for the programmes provided by the college. For the M.P.Ed programme also, the candidates are given preference as per merit so that deserving candidates only get admission. The full time and part time Ph.D. programmes are a bit selective than the Masters and have additional application requirements. Apart from the entrance test, candidates who have already qualified in NET/SLET or other eligible tests conducted by National Level Eligibility Test needs to appear for Interview only. But it is crucial to say that those candidates too need to score a minimum of 50% marks in the interview to be considered for the Ph.D. course. Such a process in a way guarantees that only the best and that have the passion to do the doctoral programmes get into it. This particular pledge of the college to produce quality personnel is also evident by it facilities such as separate hostel facilities to cater for male and female students so as to enable them create time and have adequate environment for study and training. General information concerning the scholarships are lacking but the reputation of the college, its accreditation and its willingness to assist deserving students in their education pursuits overwhelms me.
