The admission via JoSAA consider the JoSAA rank list. JoSAA is the name of the authority that conducts counselling for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. With JEE Mains score you can enter into institutes except IITs. You have to apply for JoSAA. Based on the merit of those who applied, JoSAA prepares a rank list. In each round of counselling, JoSAA publishes the opening and closing ranks for each course in every college category wise. So you too will have chances of getting a seat.

It's great that you have chosen a very emerging and different field unlike others who always want to go for CSE related fields. Now in order to get into research field in Physics subject then you should be having grip over the basic physics knowledge for which I suggest you to join B.Tech (Engineering Physics) course from Delhi Technical University as per your rank in JEE Mains. You can surely get seat into DTU as per previous year cuttoff. Next after completion of B.Tech then go for Master Degree Course like M.TECH course from IIT or IISC and then finally do P.Hd.

With your mentioned rank it is highly unlikely for you to get into NITs. You could still apply for the josaa counselling process and try your luck. But I would suggest you to try for state level engineering colleges which accept JEE main scores. You could get good colleges and your desired branch. You could use the following link to know which colleges you might get based on your scores.

To become eligible for JEE mains examination , candidate need to score minimum of 75% in the qualifying examination.
75% marks in class XII or equivalent exam or be in the top 20 percentile in their class XII exam conducted by the respective board.
As your score is less than 75 percentage , you will be ineligible to apply for counselling .

This type of problem does not arise generally, but if it does arise, then it will be resolved only after you go to the reporting center.
Honestly speaking it is not going to be so easy but if you meet the teacher of the reporting center, they will be able to tell you the best solution.
Another more option is that you can report your problem in JOSSA and jee advance website.

Hey karithi you can join the counseling for 2 times and one is for spot admission.
You have to score 75% in boards OR be in top 20 percentile of your state for participating in the counselling.
