Our Lady’s Institute of Teacher Education is a standalone institution located in Kochi, Kerala and has the sole purpose of moulding the future of education. This women’s college was set up in 1949 and has been grooming would-be teachers for more than seventy years. The institute is located in a very small 1 acre area in Thoppumpady but the department has designed that area very systematically that it provides the best environment for a student to learn. Currently, the institute has 60 students who are effectively tutored by 4 faculty members hence making learning effective due to the small population. Our Lady’s Institute of Teacher Education is approved by National Council for Teacher Education NCTE, this shows that the college has a policy of demanding high standards in training teachers.

The institute boast of a number of facilities that are meant to ease the learning process of its students. Girls’ hostel offer appropriate accommodation needs while creating a strong group among the aspiring educators. The fully equipped library is a knowledge hub and makes academic research much easier for students. To enhance the implementations of theory knowledge, the institute has departmental laboratories for every department to enable students to practice experiments. The auditorium also plays a constructive role as it acts as a centre for hosting events, seminars, cultural programmes and other activities that cater to over all, personality development. Also, through the provision of the sports facilities, student’s health especially the students’ health is improved as well as the spirit of team work.

At present, Our Lady’s Institute of Teacher Education has only one full-time course, the Diploma in Elementary Education (D. El. Ed.). This two years programme offers student with all the appropriate skills that they require to become competent teachers of early primary school. This course has an intake capacity of 50 seats which are approved, thus there is ample opportunity for the candidates who want to join this institute as teachers. Hence, while the institute concentrates on offering this particular programme, it entails that the curriculum that will be offered is all encompassing and corresponds to modern educational technologies as well as guidelines of administrative and classroom teachings.

Like in many other institutes admitting students into Our Lady’s Institute of Teacher Education is done on merit as the institute aims at recruiting the most qualified candidates to join the teaching profession. Intake processes are generally done with reference to marks gained in either the qualifying examination or an entrance test given and following the rules and regulations of the state government or UT administration. This way, only qualified candidates get hired and none of the parties is left complaining of bias hiring.
