Narendrapur, Kolkata, based Ramakrishna Mission Blind Boys’ Academy is a special school for the visually impaired students. This is one of the academy that was set up in 1957 and has been providing hope and chance for the poor for more than 6 decades. Ramakrishna Mission Blind Boys’ Academy has several establishments which have been established to accommodate visually impaired students. One striking thing about it is the braille library service which has been operational from time the institution was established. The library catalogue as at December 2018 was 36,910 volumes, 27,964 embossed, 8,946 letter-press, and 854 talking books in cassettes and CDs. This huge collection caters not only for the potentials students of the college and university but also the ex-students and the research students or scholars who are doing research on visual impaired and the associated disability. It also has boys’ hostel to ensure that it offer accommodate students in a comfortable manner. Besides, it has great management information technology facilities, sports and other facilities in regards to total personality development.
In academic area, the Ramakrishna Mission Blind Boys’ Academy is engaging itself on providing special learning. To this, the institution provides a B.Ed special education Special Needs that takes two years to complete, and is a fulltime programme. This programme is especially being offered to those students who have completed their B.A and B.Sc degrees with suitable percentage of marks and relaxed 5% for the candidates belong to reserve category securing minimum 50% marks in aggregate. It is difficult to obtain information about some specific number of seats related to the course; however, this course can really produce professional educators, who can teach the students with visual impairments successfully.
The procedure for admission to the B.Ed Special Education programme at Ramakrishna Mission Blind Boys’ Academy is very simple. The students who want to take admission in the Metric to M.Phil., should have passed their B.A. or B.Sc. examination with not less than 50% of marks for Gen. Category & 45% for SC/ST/OBC Category in aggregate.
