Sant Mela Singh College of Education, Jammu came into existence in the year 2003 is co-educational college that offers training to teachers. This affiliated college is situated in the Digiana Ashram, Jammu and has a compact area of 0.24 acres. The institute is accredited to award one degree programme, the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), with a general student capacity of 100 and equal enrolment. The college also employs a faculty strength of eleven members. student-teacher ratio is considered good so the college has the ability to provide excellent education to the students.
Sant Mela Singh College of Education has physical structures that aims at making up the learning environment of the students. The nucleus of the academic complex accommodates a library with books, readers, and reference facilities to lend to opportunity for acquisitions of many text books and periodicals. It also gets subscription to most, if not all, the leading newspapers to ensure students get acquainted with current affairs. The ideology of the college hour is not implemented strictly because the library is always open during the college day and also during holidays. The campus also has special compartmented laboratories related to their various faculties to provide practical example learning.
Sant Mela Singh College of Education offers only B.Ed programme that is a full time course over two years. This has provided a specialised focus in order to achieve the objective of producing well trained educators in the institution. It has not been possible to provide information regarding admission procedure for the current academic year but admission mostly operate through University of Jammu. Candidates seek admission through the Office of the Director Colleges Development Council through advertisements in national newspapers, preparation and issue of merit lists based on graduation marks, counseling for candidates etc.
The college offers several facilities to ensure that it offers them environment that enhance learning. A canteen on campus provides hygienic and fresh food at cheap prices. For female students the Mata Gujari Hostel in the Campus is conducive for accommodation with adequate provided with proper mess. This hostel has a well educated warden who has high moral character and who makes sure proper security and care is provided to the students. In order to ease transport the college has its own fleet of buses which ply on most of the routes in the Jammu city. First Aid, a section designed to attend to minor medical situations, is also provided in a health centre on campus.
Sant Mela Singh College of Education lays great importance to co curricular activities for the all rounded development. Students can take part in debates, essay writing, slogan writing contests, poster making and quiz contests. The college also celebrates cultural events, programmes such as talent shows, Rangoli competitions and picnics. All these activities aim at the students’ intellectual, emotional, social, moral, as well as aesthetic development. Through these activities, the students gain important lessons in time management the ability to work in groups as well as improve their social skills in readiness for the responsibilities they are likely to undertake as teachers and other leaders in the society.
