Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Science & Research, Amritsar, was started in 1992 and is one of the leading dental colleges in Punjab (India). This affiliated college recognised by the Dental Council of India offers various dental courses on an area of five acres of land. It covers a total of 350 students and 84 faculty members, paving the way for effective learning in dentistry. The institute teaches 7 courses for two degree levels focusing on different aspects of dentistry. The student gender distribution is rather representative, with a male to female ratio of 1:3, and the students are co-educational.

Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Science & Research has put into place numerous facilities that help the students in their academic as well as personal lives. The institute has a 5000-square-foot well-equipped central building with over 4286 books, 61 international and 12 Indian journals for reference. The provided campus also contains separate hostels for boys and girls so the students can feel comfortable. In the area of entertainment and relaxation, the guest will find a fully equipped gym and sports amenities. 

In addition, the institute also has a facility to take care of the health of its people, including a first aid station. The school has an event and seminar hall with a seating space of five hundred, and the hall is centrally air-conditioned. Students at the campus enjoy a fully-functional WiFi connection, which helps them connect to the internet. A well-stocked computerised central path lab enables the application of practical lessons. The institute is also equipped with transport facilities, a canteen, and car parking facilities for the students and the staff.

Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Science and Research has a total of 7 courses in its portfolio in addition to Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. The flagship undergraduate programme is the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) which is a full-time programme with an enrolment strength of 60 students. On the postgraduate level, the institute offers the following MDS courses, which have an intake of 3 students each. The specialised MDS programmes are the following: Conservatory Dentistry and Endodontics; oral and maxillofacial surgery; prosthetics and crowns and bridges; periodontology; orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics; and paediatrics. Each course is available in full-time format, and thus students obtain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in respective dental fields. The total number of students at the institute, across all programmes, was 353 in the latest academic year.

Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Dental Science and Research has centralised the admission procedure on the basis of the scores that the students obtain in the national-level tests. In the case of the BDS programme, access is provided by the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET). Similarly for the MDS programmes, the candidate has to ensure that he/she has passed NEET MDS—National Eligibility and Entrance Test for MDS. College infrastructure was quite average, I did not stay in the hostel as I belonged to the same city but as per my other friends, hostels were quite decent and spacious. Mess was also there but the food was not that good.
