Sri Vidya College of Education, Virudhunagar: Admission, Courses, Fees, Placements

Sri Vidya College of Education was started in 2007 with a view to offering high-standard education to students of Virudhunagar in the state of Tamil Nadu. This state university-affiliated, co-educational college aims at producing educators of the future. Recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), it provides the best teacher training programmes on its small 1.31-acre campus. This college offers an intimate learning environment and a student strength of 262 and has a total faculty of 23. The college currently has two course specialisations in education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

For a more effective delivery of learning to its students, the institute also offers various kinds of facilities for improved learning. A good library is an information centre that contains valuable materials needed by prospective teachers. The college also cultivates a healthy mind in a healthy body through the provision of sporting amenities and an annual college sporting event for the physical development of the students. As per the requirement of the present education system, Sri Vidya College of Education has had very good IT systems. 

There are well-developed and resourced laboratories for physical sciences, biological sciences, psychology, and mathematics that facilitate practical lessons. Technically, an auditorium is an event and seminar hall that establishes a platform for ideas to be shared. Since the college is situated far from many areas, the college has also opened separate hostels for boys and girls, respectively, to accommodate the students. Furthermore, the institute has transport amenities to support the movement of scholars and staff, especially for those who travel from school to home and vice versa.

Sri Vidya College of Education currently offers two full-time courses: a Bachelors of Education (B.ED.) and Masters of Education (M.ED.) programme. The two programmes run for two years each to ensure that the institute provides adequate training for teachers. The B.Ed. programme provides learning intake for 100 students, while the M.Ed. programme covers 50 students only. These programmes are meant for preparing the students to be adequate in the area of study, which is education. The college gives priority to these core education programmes to ensure that the college provides focused attention towards shaping the training of teachers towards facing the challenges of education today.

The admission policy, therefore, adopted at Sri Vidya College of Education is based on a merit list proposed with due consultation with the state government policies, UT administration, and the university's ‘Affiliating Body.’. While providing the admission for the B.Ed. programme, the qualification of the candidates as per the marks secured in their qualifying or entrance examination is taken into consideration. In the same manner, the admission criteria in the M.Ed. programme are based solely on merit through an admission test in addition to the qualifying examination and any other test as prescribed by the university or ordinance. Some of the advantages of this approach are that this approach specifically guarantees that only competent students are admitted to the college and that these would likely make good teachers.

The college does have an active Alumni Association where the college does arrange meetings once each year that are aimed more at business networking and learning sessions. This association also offers the scholarship to the needy students and assists in offering books for loan to the students, thus proving the college’s support for its students even after their expulsion from the college. With its current programmes and its specific aim in teacher training, the Sri Vidya College of Education in Virudhunagar has made a significant contribution to the development of the institution.
