The tertiary institution of stipulated for the deaf is St. Louis College for the Deaf, Chennai was founded in the year 1993. This affiliated college is in Adyar, Chennai and this college is built on 3 acres of land which provides a conventional setting for the specially-abstracted students of the hearing-impaired group. The college currently boasts of a student population of 289 and a staff of 14: the head counts ensure that the college keeps it small and able to manage its students individually.
As will be observed herein, St. Louis College has made provision of facilities that will complement the learning process of its students. The campus includes separate hostels for girl and boys separately, the boy’s hostel can accommodate about 100 students, in fact, it has the capacity for that. Accommodation in the form of hostels for female students are made available through FIHM sister's convent in Indra Nagar Adyar, K.K. Nagar and Little Mount Hostel facilities are provided by CIC sisters. College library acts as a software centre while departmental laboratory and efficient IT facility are used for practical studies. This is because the college has a contemporary playground where students can engage in sporting activities with advanced sport materials. The college also has a first aid station in a health centre, hence guaranteeing the health of its students. A cafeteria is provided on campus providing quality food, an auditorium for different programmes and seminars are held in the school year.
The Later we have a brief list of three full time programmes in the St. Louis college for the deaf which specializes to students with hearing impairment basing my reasons as follows. For the undergraduates’ programme they offer three years Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) and three years Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA). In its pursuit for academic excellence, the college offers two-year Master of Commerce (M.Com) programme. These courses are intended to provide students with the appropriate knowledge and practical skills to perform well in their professions of choice and course content and delivery modified for deaf students.
The admission requirements for St. Louis College for the Deaf has been eased so as to encourage deaf students to apply for the college. Prospective students do not have to go through specifics as to how they will be admitted to the particular courses, although the college must take into consideration academic performance in previous studies as well as signs language skills. The objective of the St. Louis College for the Deaf is therefore to ensure that the Deaf are able to access quality education that caters for their needs with an aim of enabling them fit well in society and also being productive members of society.
