Unnamalai Institute of Technology (UIT) started in the year 2009 is a private college affiliated to the Thiruvalluvar University, Thoothukudi. Recognised by the AICTE and(duration) associated with the Anna University, Chennai, UIT is commitment to offer technical education. The institute is located across a campus of 33 acres and provides five engineering under graduate programmes. UIT has hundreds of students and more number of faculties, the ratio of students to a faculty is low. It is described by 54% male and 46% female student enrolment, and all the students are from Tamil Nadu state.

Unnamalai Institute of Technology, Thoothukudi provides many amenities to improve the studying process of creative individuals. The campus comprises of male and female hostels which provide accommodation, fitted rooms, TV room, clean nutritional dining services. A modem library with a special reference section offers access to e-journals, and e-Books through DELNET. The institute also provides for the need of physical health with facilities such as basketball and volleyball courts, a football field, a gym, among others. At present, it provides five full time B.E. courses which are of four years in length to the students. These includes BE in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. In total, the approved intake for these courses is 240, where 60 are offered for each specialisation except Civil engineering that it is unclear what the intake is. This wide variety of programmes offered here helps in the various fields of engineering ranging from IT to civil, giving the student wide choice of careers to pursue in the technical sector.

UIT Thoothukudi has following system of admissions, It admits the candidates for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses on the basis of merit and on the online counselling of Tamil Nadu. Students who wish to join any of the programme offered by this university must meet the set cut-off as determined by the management. The institute offers admission to various engineering entrance exam, but TNEA major entrance exam of the institute. UIT provides scholarships for deserving students, 117 of 352 students availed reimbursements in the recently ended academic year. Although information about certain alumni is hard to come by, the institute is well placed to prepare students into professionals capable of fulfilling their duties in engineering.
