The Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal was established in year 1985 which is a constituent college of Tamil Nadu, India. This institute occupies a massive land of 500.18 acres and aims at promoting the knowledge in veterinary and animal sciences. Having a strength of 468 students, the college provide a diversified learning atmosphere and is staffed with 122 faculty members. The institute provides two specialized degree programs: A five year program leading to the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc and AH) and two years Master of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc). Females are 52% and males are 48%; undergraduates are 92% while postgraduates are 8%.

It also features modern installations aimed at improving teaching and learning process and to complement the research process. College library has over 9975 books, 87 journal titles, 2800 back volumes and other multimedia facilities. The college students enjoy certain privilege such as free Internet connection and computer literacy provided at the colleges computer laboratory which forms part of IT facility of the institute. It also avails itself to state of the art laboratory facilities to enable the various departments to practically study several facets of veterinary sciences. 

Interested students can accommodate in the institute provided hostel that accommodate both male and female students separately but with equal comfort. As for facilities the health center offers first aid services and the cafeteria offers foods that are provided to the students and the staff. Sports are played in various exercising fields and a gym and the amphitheater is used for conducting academics and cultural activities.

Being a Veterinary College and Research Institute it has two full- time courses focused curriculum. The B.V.Sc and AH program takes five years to complete to offer quality undergraduate education in veterinary science. For the most specialized concern, postgraduate studies can be taken from the two-year Master of Veterinary Science or M.V.Sc. The total enrolled students in the institute for now stands at 457 and would like to ensure that the institute always has the best student faculty ratio. The total enrollment for both programs in the most recent academic year was 468, which shows that a good number of students are using the opportunity to get into college.

Like many institutions in the world, the Veterinary College and Research Institute has set the admission process in a way that it evaluates the most potential students in the veterinary science. The B.V.Sc and AH program of the institute has strict rules that 90% of the students are from Tamil Nadu and only 9% from other states. Similarly in the undergraduate program a total of three hundred and thirty students received financial aid out of four hundred and thirty students, in the post graduate program only six out of thirty eight students were recipients of such assistance. 

This commitment to financial aid means that there will be deserving students who can fund their veterinary education without most of the hassles. For B.V.Sc and A.H, Students  has to pass 10+2 or equivalent examinations with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English with a minimum of 50% marks from a recognized board of the country are eligible for admission into this course  and Should have to cleared All India Pre-Veterinary Test (AIPVT) or some state specific veterinary test. They are some national and state-level entrance exams to appear for the admission into the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry program.

AIPVT (All India Pre-Veterinary Test) has been replaced by the NEET examination from 2018. NEET is a national level exam that usually offers admission to medical courses such as MBBS, BDS, MD, among others. But now the candidates seeking admission in BVSc Animal Husbandry courses through 15% all India Quota seats will have to compulsorily appear for NEET examination.
