What is Pulp and Paper Technology?
Pulp and paper technology comes under chemical technology. Science involves using pulp and wood to produce paper. The main basis of the pulp and paper technology course revolves around chemical engineering. Pulp and Paper Technology course enables students to understand the process of manufacturing paper. They get an overview of all the processes involved in it.
Knowledge of pulp and paper technology is applied to various fields. Publishing houses, newspaper agencies and many others employ people from this field in their companies. The industry produces paper and cellulose-based products using pulp and wood as raw material. The pulp is then set up to dry and lose its water content, and it is then made into sheets. Pulp and Paper Technology is not as simple as it is made to believe. Hence the students are given a strong foundation in chemical engineering and the basic sciences.
As the pulp and paper technology course is industry oriented, the students are given sufficient exposure. They are provided field works, and mill runs, on a regular basis. The course, pulp and paper technology also ensures that the students are up to date with the technology. In addition to this, they are made to do a lot of research and development on their own. The course comprises both theory and practical.
Eligibility Criteria for Pulp and Paper Technology

These are some of the criteria that those who wish to pursue pulp and paper technology courses should keep in mind. The admission process is unique to each college. These are only the common and basic requirements. Entrance examinations, interviews and other such processes and formalities play a vital role in the admission process of pulp and paper technology course.
Colleges conduct entrance exams before selecting students for the course. Pulp and paper technology falls under engineering. It is a unique course that very few colleges offer.
Students could pursue chemical engineering for their bachelor’s and then specialise in pulp and paper technology in-case they don’t find a college that offers a bachelor's programme in pulp and paper technology.
Students should keep in mind the entrance examinations, as it plays a vital role in admissions. They could look out for any national level engineering entrance examinations or state-level examinations. Here are some of the entrance examinations that you could prepare for.
JEE Main - JEE Main is a national level engineering examination. A large number of aspirants appear for the exam every year. A good score in the JEE’s could get you admissions in the best colleges of the country including the IITs and IISc.
MHT CET- Maharashtra Common Entrance Tests are conducted by the government of Maharashtra. It is a state-level examination. A large number of colleges in Maharashtra offer courses in pulp and paper technology. Hence, a good score in this exam could get you seats in various institutions.
GATE- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is usually attempted by those who wish to do their Master’s in Engineering. It is recommended that aspirants appear for this exam if they want a successful career in pulp and paper technology.
Besides the entrance examinations mentioned here, there are various other entrance exams. Some colleges conduct their entrance exams. They would even hold personal and group interviews to test your problem-solving skills and compatibility.
Scope of Pulp and Paper Technology
The scope for pulp and paper technology courses is not as great as the scope for the rest of the engineering branches. Even then, the scope is fair. As technology is advancing and progressing, the requirement for paper seems to be diminishing. With the introduction of alternate materials and mechanisation, it seems like the paper industry is dying. But that is not the case. Pulp and paper technology is useful in producing a massive variety of products.
Pulp and Paper Technology is coming off use to behemoth industries. Manufacturing of food, fertilisers, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, fragrances and many other industries are applying this technology for their production. Even though the paper industry seems like it is not going to survive, it will. This is because the paper is still used and preferred by a large section. The packaging industry depends on the paper industry. Transporting companies require large amounts of paper.
Moreover, the paper and the packaging industry together employ a large section of the population. A great number of employment opportunities come from these industries. Hence, there is a large scope for pulp and paper technology, both in India and outside. Japan, U.S, Finland, China, Germany are among the countries that employ the most in this field. Working in these countries will improve your chance of employment. Since technology is useful to other industries, the employment rates also will be higher. This field, pulp and paper technology will survive and will continue to function efficiently.
