Discuss the role of physical, social and archaeological anthropology in studying tourism.
Hi aspirant, The anthropology of tourism offers an insight into the socio-cultural dimensions of tourism, such as the type of cultures and societies. International tourists in the second half of the twentieth century started to visit those locations in which many anthropologists had carried out their fieldwork. The interaction between tourists and local people provided a new source of anthropological enquiry.
Therefore, traditionally in tourism studies, anthropology tended to deal with the impacts of tourism on the lifestyles, traditions and cultures of local people, residents or ‘hosts’.
Thank You.

anthropology vs sociology which is best for begginers in upsc optional?
Hello Kesavan!
Both Anthropology and Sociology are two of the particularly popular elective courses. When it comes to sociology, it has more number of takers as compared to Anthropology. More applicants appear to believe that sociology is preferable optional. The curriculum is somewhat shorter and is easy to comprehend. It is more famous among humanities grads since it contains less science than anthropology. It also aids in writing essays.
Anthropology,on the other hand is a preferable option for science students, particularly those with a background in biology. Students with science background find it more scoring. Writing abilities aren't as crucial in anthropology as they are in sociology.
Before selecting the optional, make sure to go through the syllabus and then opt considering the subject you are more comfortable in.
All the best!
Discuss the relationship between anthropology and tourism
Dear Student,
The term anthropology is derived from two Greek words “Anthropos” meaning (Hu)man and ‘Logos’ for ‘study or science’.
It seeks to understand the lives of human beings in time and space. Time basically reflects the geological time scale that involves the study of human evolution, growth and variation whereas space deals with the ecological and environmental relationship of human populations that inhabits the various places on earth.
Anthropology comprises the study of the past cultures and how the present culture is flourishing. It is the study of human beings in totality unlike other subjects where only a particular aspect of human being is taken into account like history deals with what happened in the past while psychology studies the human mind etc.
Anthropology as an academic discipline emerged at the turn of the twentieth century. With four main branches
a. Physical or Biological anthropology,
b. Social and Cultural anthropology,
c. Archaeological anthropology and
d. Linguistic anthropology,
the subject matter looks at both the scientific and humanistic perspectives, it takes into account a holistic approach to study humankind.
The physical/ biological anthropologists are interested in understanding the origin, evolution, variation and development of human species. The curiosity to know why there is variations in skin, eye, hair colour etc., leads them to enquire about the existence of human variation and to try and find scientific explanations behind such variations.
Tourism has a long history and is widespread in the cultures of humankind. It is an important social fact in the life of contemporary people. It is one of the major industries of the world and a developmental tool for many third world countries.
Tourism= Leisure time+ discretionary income+ positive local sanctions.
Happy Learning!

after betch mechanical can i do ma anthropology? and any chance to do Msc?
Hello,
Yes, you may go after it. Many institutions in India offer MA and M.Sc in Anthropology programmes, allowing students to pursue Masters in Anthropology after graduating from a recognised university in any field. However, only a few institutions need a bachelor's degree in Anthropology or a graduate degree in Anthropology.
If biology was one of your studies in secondary school, you can get a degree from Utkal University; if not, you may go for IGNOU, which has no such restrictions.
Furthermore, if you have a true interest in Social Anthropology, you can try a different route. First, earn a master's degree in sociology from a prestigious institution such as JNU, and then pursue a M Phil/PhD in an Anthropology-related subject from any university in India or abroad.
Hope it helped
Thank you
