Merchant Navy is a very challenging and exciting profession. It is also very rewarding and demads discipline.
Merchant Navy after 12th:
- To join as Deck Officer:
Requirement:
1. B.Sc. Nautical Science (3 years).
2. Diploma in Nautical Science leads to B.Sc. Nautical Science(1 yr)
- To join as an engineer:
1. B.E./B.Tech in Marine Engineering (4 yrs)
- To join as Rating after class X or XII:
1. Pre sea GP training course (6 months)
- To join in the catering department after class X or XII
1. Maritime catering course (6 months)
2. B.Sc. in marine catering (3 yrs)
Earlier these courses used to be affiliated to different universities and institutes but now they have merge and most of the courses come under the purview of INDIA MARITIME UNIVERSITY, IMU.
IMU conducts its entance test through which candidates are accepted to different stream based on their performance.
ELIGIBILITY:
- The minimum age is 17 years and the maximum age is 25 years. The maximum age relaxation for ST category is 5 years.
- A certificate of fitness from a medical practitioner is mandatory.
The online application for IMU CET will be released on 6th April 2019.

What can I choose for joining merchant Navy?
The eligibility for joining merchant navy is finishing class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Candidates have to be unmarried Indian citizens (male or female).
Normal vision is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed.
Admission is through an entrance followed by a screening test and a main written examination.
After clearing the test, there is an interviewand a medical test.
You also need to complete a ship-training course prior to the employment. The course is generally short-term where the candidates are taught basic security concerns of voyaging.

there is a one year GME course after your graduation that course gives licence to enter into merchant navy. for eligibile criteria the student must have minimum 65%in graduation and 60%in 10 and 12 classes .
the age limit is not more than 28 years to join in merchant navy

To join Merchant Navy after doing B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering there is only one way by doing Graduate Marine Engineer (GME) course from the college such as Anglo Eastern, Great Eastern etc. Who have their own colleges. So that it will be better for you as you don't have to search for shipping companies after doing the course.
It is of around one year of course in which you also have to do on-board training on ship to complete your course.
Do remember that you have to go through a Medical test which will be conducted by the Doctors approved by D.G. Shipping. Also, if your eyesight is above 6/12 or 2.5 than you won't be able to clear your Medicals as it is the minimum requirement of D.G. shipping regarding eyesight.

· Procedure for pursuing a career in merchant navy
The eligibility for joining merchant navy is completing class 12 with the subject math, physics and chemistry. The candidates must be Indian citizens and they must not be married. This is irrespective of the gender. Another requirement is normal vision but glasses with power not exceeding 2.5 might be allowed.
· Process
The admission will be after undertaking an entrance test. After this there will be a screening test and then again, a written main examination. The admission has two levels of testing. A screening test will be there initially. Those who clear it will be qualified for the main written exam. Once the test is cleared there will be a medical examination. Physical fitness is also looked into. Before getting employed the candidates have to go through ship training for making them prepared for the job. It is a short duration course where they will be taught about managing security concerns of voyaging.

To join Merchant Navy either in Deck Department or in Engine department you first need to give IMU CET conducted by Indian Maritime University every year. After clearing that you have to go for the counselling to get admission into the colleges of IMU and to get in any College affiliated to it you have to apply separately by going on their site.
The eligibility criteria of IMU-CET is you should have passed 12th with minimum 60% in PCM and should have scored minimum of 50% in English.
Also, after clearing the exam you have to go for Medical conducted by D.G. shipping approved Doctors in different cities. For Deck Department there is no relaxation with the eyesight it should be 6/6 without glasses and for Engine department it can be around 6/18 or 2.5 without glasses.

There are almost 5 courses in Merchant navy field. It depends upon you which course you would like to join. Although if you join IMU then the course fee will be starting from 170000 to 300000 per annum . But if you join some private institute then the course fee may exceed by 100000 to 300000 per annum. For the admission process, you just need to give the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test (IMU CET).
How to make careerin merchant navy?

To join Merchant Navy first you need to pass 10+2 with minimum of 60% in PCM and 50% in English along with that if you're choosing Deck Department you shouldn't be wearing glasses but if you're choosing Engine Department then there is a relaxation for that which is 6/18 or 2.5 without glasses.
You can get into Merchant Navy by doing the following courses from India Maritime University:
For Deck Department: 1. B.Sc in Nautical Science
2. Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc
For Engineering Department: 1. B.E. Marine Engineering
2. B.E. in Naval Architecture
Also, you can join Merchant Navy by doing B.E. in Mechanical or Electrical then after go for GME course you can make career into shipping.
For IMU you need to give IMU-CET which is conducted every year and after the written exam you have to go for the counselling and Medical to get into any college.
