Hello Saivaishnavi,

Knitwear design and textile design, Both are really good departments where u can learn textiles, textile technology and also garment construction. Both the departments deal with fabric development from the fibre stage. Fabrics used in clothing are classified into three types: woven, non woven, knit fabrics.

Textile Design deals with more about weaving and woven textiles, you will learn everything from handlooms to machine looms. while knitwear totally focuses on knits eg. the Jersey material used in the T shirts, lycra in the sportwear and also the flat knits used in the woolens and outer wear.

Both the departments are the best in their own way. It depends on your Interest.

If you want to work on traditional textiles, embroideries, weaving, handlooms and prints, then Textile Design is the better option for you, there is a lot of scope for textile designers in India. You will get a lot of exposure about the textile industry through out your degree. Most of the famous designers in India are working with handlooms and traditional textiles. you will have more exploration and knowledge about textiles compared to garment construction. Its more about Fabric development and surface techniques like dyeing, embroideries, Appliquè etc.

While Knitwear design totally focusses on knits, knitwear technology, hand knitting to computerised knitting. You will have complete exposure in fabric development. knitwear is a very vast subject. If you are intrested in sportswear,

t shirts, outerwear,etc.. you can opt for Knitwear design. Knitwear design also deals with surface embellishment, print design and garment construction i.e pattern making and stitching clothes. So you will know about fabric development also the garments.

Knitwear Design is available in various campuses i.e. NIFT Delhi, Mumbai, Banglore, Kolkata, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Chennai. Knitwear industries in India are mostly based in Tirupur, Tamil nadu for circular knits and Ludhiana,Punjab for Flat knits.

Knitwear design is a good choice if you want to work with both the knit textiles and garments. Sportwear, T shirts and Lingerie will always be in demand, once you are well versed with handling knit fabrics, you can work in any of these clothing categories.

You will have a lot of scope to learn and explore in both the departments. Basic textiles, Print design and Design process are few subjects which are common in every design department.

I hope i have given enough information for u to understand both the departments. Feel free to ask any questions further.

Just know your interests, choose the best for u.

All the best.

If you want to work on traditional textiles, weaving, handlooms, prints, Textile is the right option for you. The only drawback is you will not have much exploration into garments, it's more about fabrics.

If you are into sportswear, t shirts, outerwear, can opt for Knitwear design. Knitwear design also deals with garment construction i.e making clothes.
