Hello,

Any degree or graduation/post-graduation in any subject is alright. For higher education, one should always pursue the subject which one finds interesting and is comfortable with. Academic career and interest should not be compromised for an uncertain and highly competitive career in civil service.

First of all, if you think that you want to be an IAS then I will suggest you to go for Bachelor In Arts.

You can take majors Political science or sociology.

This subjects help one to crack any government exams like UPSC, SSC CGL and State Public Comission Exams and RRB too.

This subjects are very informative and easy to understand.

I will say if you belong from Arts background then please go for it but if you are from other background like Science, I will suggest that think twice or thrice or hundred times before changing streams.

UPSCs syllabus is unrecognizable and it changes with time.

Hi Gulshan,

Please remember the eligibility criteria for UPSC Civil Service Exam (CSE) is 21 years and a graduation in any subject. You should also take note that final year students can apply for IAS Prelims. Many candidates miss this early opportunity and come into UPSC Civil Service Exam preparation field only very late.

IAS is not connected with intermediate and graduation. It is totally a different career altogether. Just command your English, Maths, and  GS regularly and join a coaching institute from the 2nd year of your graduation.

Start preparing for UPSC CSE with following steps :

  • "Starts reading NCERT books (VI-XII) for basic understanding so that you will be habitual for more readings.
  • If you have the interest to learn so many things from different fields then I am sure you will enjoy your preparation with NCERT Books. The fact is language & the way of explaining things in NCERT books is so simple & interesting. Everyone can understand easily.
  • Along with this, try to read editorials from the Hindu newspaper. not just read, try to grasp about which it is explaining. just remember some key facts from editorials like reasons, consequences, prof/con. of something. from this thing, your reading comprehension ability will also enhance which will be the plus point for your CSAT paper 2.
  • Don't take all these things like a burden. After some time you will feel some confidence. once you start your preparation taking it in an interesting way, your confidence will be boosted.
  • Join any test series for prelims . according to test series schedule, try to attempt maximum no of tests. after that analysis is must, that in which areas you are lagging behind. try to improve those areas.
  • Keep your study material as minimum as possible. it's better to revise the topics from the same source rather than referring so many sources for the same topics.
  • Follow academy videos by Roman Saini Sir or on youtube. these videos will clear your doubts regarding CSE. when I thought about writing CSE just six-seven months before, I was completely confused that how should I start my preparation but after watching all these videos all problems have been solved. The way in which Roman Sir explained the things in these videos is amazing. you will really enjoy.
  • The most important thing is " why do you want to be an IAS officer? ". I think this question's answer will play an important role while you start your preparation. before going to start, it must be clear what are the reasons that push you to become an IAS.
  • It does not matter you will qualify/fail in the examination but I am sure you will get tonnes of knowledge. that will the positive thing for your next attempt.
  • Follow all those people who have been qualified for CSE, not those who even couldn't clear prelims in 4-5 attempts. last one thing is "Believe in yourself", no matter what your friends say".

You should be bold/Risk taker for achieving your goal in your life.
