Hello,
The solution to the problem lies in the basic concept of speed and velocity.
Speed is a scalar quantity and it doesn't depend upon direction.
Hence since the boy walked 3m East in 2seconds and then 2m West in 3seconds, you can calculate average speed by the formula -
AVERAGE SPEED = TOTAL DISTANCE COVERED / TOTAL TIME TAKEN
(Since nothing has been mentioned in the question about the Direction, if it is written wet to boy or a general case, we will treat it a general case)
Hence average speed = 3 + 2 / 2 + 3
= 1 m/s
Now, Velocity is a vector quantity and it depends upon the direction. Hence we can calculate velocity as following -
Average Velocity = Total Displacement / Total Time Taken
Average Velocity = 3m - 2m / 2 + 3
= 0.2 m/s West.
I hope you find the answer helpful.
Thank you.
Hi aspirant,
For solving this question, have to know some basic concepts of physics:
According to the question, the average speed= 3+2/5 = 1m/s
Now for calculating average velocity we need to add first calculate displacement, which is final position- initial position= 1m
Therefore average velocity= 1/5 m/s
Hope it helps!!
