When a cell is immersed in a hypotonic solution with a lower solute concentration than the interior of the cell, water moves into the cell via osmosis. As a result, the cell will absorb water and expand in volume. This can cause the cell to become turgid, which means it gets stiff and enlarged due to the water influx.
