Question : A farmer travelled a distance of 61 km in 9 hours. He travelled partly on foot at a speed of 4 km/hr and partly on bicycle at a speed of 9 km/hr. The distance travelled on foot is:
Option 1: 14 km
Option 2: 16 km
Option 3: 20 km
Option 4: 18 km
Correct Answer: 16 km
Solution :
Let the time the farmer travelled on foot be $x$ hour.
Then at a speed of 4 km/hour, the distance travelled by him on foot = $4x$ km
Now the time the farmer travelled on bicycle = $(9-x) $ hours
and at a speed of 9 km/hour, the distance travelled by him on bicycle = $9×(9-x)$ km
So we can say that, $4x+ 9×(9-x) = 61$
$⇒ 4x+81-9x = 61$
$⇒ 5x = 20$
$⇒ x= 4$ hours
$\therefore$ The distance travelled on foot is = (4 × 4) km = 16 km
Hence, the correct answer is 16 km.
