Question : A man drives his car at a speed of 50 km/hr for 2 hours and then decides to slow down to 40 km/hr till the end of the journey. If his average speed for the journey was 44 km/hr, then for how much time did he drive his car at a speed of 40 km/hr?
Option 1: 2 hours
Option 2: 1 hour
Option 3: 3 hours
Option 4: 4 hours
Correct Answer: 3 hours
Solution :
Let the time of driving at 40 km/hr be $t$ hours.
The total distance travelled = $( 50 \times 2 + 40 \times t)$ km
The total time of travelling = $2 + t$ hours.
According to the question,
⇒ $44 = \frac{{50 \times 2 + 40 \times t}}{{2 + t}}$
⇒ $88+44t=100+40t$
⇒ $4t=12$
$\therefore t=3$
Hence, the correct answer is 3 hours.
