Question : A man takes 20 hours to go to a place and come back by walking both ways. He could have saved 4 hours by riding both ways. The distance covered in the whole journey is 36 miles. Find the average speed for the whole journey if he goes by walking and comes back by riding.
Option 1: 2 miles/hr
Option 2: 1 miles/hr
Option 3: 4 miles/hr
Option 4: 3 miles/hr
Correct Answer: 2 miles/hr
Solution :
A man takes 20 hours to go to a place and come back by walking both ways.
Time taken by walking one way = half of 20 hours = 10 hours.
Time taken by riding both ways = 20 – 4 = 16 hours
Time taken by riding one way = half of 16 = 8 hours.
Time taken by walking one way and by riding one way = 10 + 8 = 18 hours..
The total distance travelled = 36 miles.
The average speed $=\frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}}=\frac{36}{10 + 8 } = 2$ miles/hr.
Hence, the correct answer is 2 miles/hr.
