Pond appears shallower because of refraction. Refraction is the phenomenon of bending of light rays when it moves from rarer medium to denser medium. Because of this a pond appears shallower than it actually is. Some examples are- formation of rainbow, sun rays reach the sun before actual sun rise, twinkling of stars etc.
