IIT JAM Eligibility Criteria mandates candidates to hold a Bachelor's Degree. Candidates belonging to General/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) category must have at least 55% aggregate in Bachelor's. The marks secured include all the subjects studied at the graduation level, without rounding off the marks.

In order to get into NIT, one must take the JEE (MAIN) exam and secure at least 75% marks (65% for SC/ST) in Class 12th exam or be in the top 20 percentile in Class 12th exam conducted by the respective board. Admissions are on the basis of rank in JEE (Main).

The Bachelor of Technology admissions for Indian students was based on the JEE – Main (Joint Entrance Examination). The exam consists of three sections on Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. However, since the year 2013, admissions are done through the JEE Mains, and ranks are given after considering 60% of the marks scored in the test, and 40% in the class 12 Board examinations. The B.Tech admissions for foreign students are done through Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) and ICCR schemes.
