A substitution reaction is the addition of chlorine (Cl 2 ) to benzene (C 6 H 6 ) in the presence of aluminium chloride (AlCl 3 ). This is referred to as electrophilic substitution. One or more hydrogen atoms in the benzene ring are replaced by chlorine atoms during this process. The aluminium chloride functions as a catalyst, creating electrophilic species capable of attacking the benzene ring.
