You can definitely take a break and prepare, but you have to prepare for the best because there are companies that come for placement in the final years but they do not accept students with educational breaks, so you have to be aware and prepare from now only.

There is no upper age limit for the VIT exam so yes you will be eligible to give the exam after a year gap.
