Lateral entry is offered at various universities and engineering colleges. This enables students to take admission directly in 2 years. The eligibility is that a student must have completed 3 years of diploma in engineering or B.Sc. degree or equivalent examination with at least 50% marks, and Mathematics as a compulsory subject in Class XII, to get admitted in the second year directly. Most of the engineering institutes conduct entrance exams to offer admission to students. Different institutes conducts different exams.

With this, pursuing B.Tech. after the Diploma gets easier and possible for students. Students can get into a B. Tech programme through lateral entrance examination or the engineering entrance examination .
