Hi aspirant!!
You can start preparing for gate in second year of engineering because that was the time you are to introduce with your basic subject the core subjects. You can start with doing numerical problem and then slowly slowly start with papers and all. For more information you can check the link given below

Hope this help
Thank you
Greetings,
A few things to know before you venture off:
- the fact that you made 2 attempts and still could not clear JEE Mains can mean that it is difficult for you to grasp the strategy and level of clarity needed to clear such national level exams.
- GATE, being a graduate level exam, is going to be tougher in the sense that it will require conceptual clarity and will cover almost everything you study during under graduation.
- GATE for ESE is especially difficult (do check out old exam papers)
Now, should you begin in your 1st year?
- simple answer would be - No, because typically you do not study subjects relevant to GATE in 1st year and you should definitely give yourself a break of at least this 1 year (after 3 long years of JEE stuff) to wind down and rehabilitate yourself into the new life you are going to make.
- It is great that you want to pursue your dream of getting into a premier Engineering college but please bear in mind that if you are unable to catch the exam pattern, strategy required and disciplined needed then no matter how many attempts you give the result will not change. On the other hand people get pretty good ranks in GATE with just 1 year of coaching in their 4th year (aside from paying attention in class, being a good student and scoring well in semester exams which helps build their foundation)
- It is not wise to indulge in GATE prep when you don't yet understand the syllabus, the concepts and the system of admission into PG courses.
I hope you got a bit of clarity, relax and do not rush these decisions.
Good luck!
Dear student,
You can start your preparation from your 1st year. But the best time to start preparation is the end of your 2nd year. The very first thing is that, if you want to prepare for GATE, then you must know the complete syllabus of your exam. You can check all the syllabus in link mentioned below.

Now the next part is how to prepare? The best answer to this is that, start from basic. Your basic concepts must be very clear. Follow some good books for preparation. Some best books for GATE are given below.
Also solve good level problems, an also solve mock tests. For better score, you must solve previous year papers. And at the time of exam, don't be fear. Give the exam with full confidence. If your score comes very nice in GATE, then surely you can get IIT's, NIT's.
Hope this helps.
