An apple is an example of a false fruit.  A false fruit develops from the floral parts other than the ovary, such as the receptacle (the thickened part of the stem where the flower's organs are attached) or other surrounding tissues. In the case of an apple, the fleshy part that we commonly eat is derived from the receptacle of the flower. The true fruit of an apple is the small cluster of seeds in the center, called the core. The rest of the fruit, the juicy and edible part, is formed from the enlargement and development of the flower's receptacle.
