To join National Defence Academy a candidate must appear in the entrance exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission, twice a year, normally in month of March and August. Candidate must be a unmarried male. To join NDA one must pass written followed by SSB, medicals and finally to be in merit list.

The process for entry into the prestigious National Defence Academy takes one complete year from the time of registration to finally becoming a cadet. It unfolds in the following steps :

Application for written examination- The Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) conducts the written examination for NDA. It is notified on their website as well as in the employment news twice in an year. More details pertaining to age and educational eligibility are available in that detailed notification. So the first step would be to figure out when the application forms are out and apply for the same after going through all the details.

The written Examination- You receive online admit card for the exam. It is usually a month or 3 weeks prior to the date of the examination. The syllabus is provided in the earlier detailed notification. A mathematics paper consists of questions from 11th and 12th grade. A different paper for English and General Studies is also conducted on the same day. It is necessary to clear both these papers separately to qualify the written exam.

Result- The results of the written part can be declared anytime after 3 months from the date of examination. You must keep checking the UPSC website for the same.

Services Selection Boards(SSB)- All the qualified candidates are then called for SSB interview. It is a detailed process and its discussion is beyond the scope of this answer.

Services Selection Boards(SSB)- All the qualified candidates are then called for SSB interview. It is a detailed process and its discussion is beyond the scope of this answer. You will find many relevant questions regarding the SSB here on Quora, likeWhat do they actually look for, while selecting for SSB? I have attended two interviews, given my best, was good at the GD and other rounds, but was not recommended. Candidates with less knowledge and less participation were selected.andWhat happens in the NDA SSB?which will give you a relevant idea about it.

Medicals- All the "recommended" candidates i.e. the people who are selected by the SSB are made to undergo medical testing to check for their physical fitness to become officers in their choice of service namely Army, Navy or Air Force.

Merit List- Having qualified the SSB and cleared the medicals is still no guarantee for success. A merit list is created of all such candidates and it is based on the marks scored in the written examination as well the in the SSB. Candidates higher in merit receive call letters to finally join NDA( a dream come true, indeed!). The rest have to wait and their chance comes up only if there are still any vacancies left. The intake in the NDA is usually 335. So people with a merit rank upto 335 are sure to get in.

Hope it helped.
