Preparation of CLAT has no limits. CLAT basically tests your language skills, logical aptitude, basic mathematical knowledge, General awareness and some legal reasoning.
Language is something you develop throughout your life, if you want to get better you surely can take classes for English.
Logical Aptitude requires practice. They are easy but all you need is speed if you want to compete. Similar for quantitative aptitude, you need some basic knowledge and practice.
General awareness is basically to test how aware you are. You just need to keep yourself updated with 6-8 months of current affairs.

But for legal portion you need to study a bit. Because a person who's unaware of it can't answer it correctly. It needs practice, good language skills and understanding.
6-8 months is enough for CLAT prep but if you want to do really well then you a year or so.

It is best to start preparing for CLAT as early as possible, i.e. probably when you are in 11th standard. This is necessary to know the exam pattern, understanding the concepts and basics, and of course, to practice as many questions as possible. It is also okay if you are in 12th as long as you are serious and dedicate your time properly to concepts, problem solving and self analysis.
