Biomedical engineering is actually a branch of engineering focusing on medical science. It is designed for students who want to work as engineers in the healthcare sector. Biomedical engineers combine engineering principles with medical and biological sciences to design and create equipment, devices, computer systems, and software used in healthcare.

Biomedical engineers typically do the following:

• Design biomedical equipment and devices, such as artificial internal organs, replacements for body parts, and machines for diagnosing medical problems
• Install, adjust, maintain, repair, or provide technical support for biomedical equipment
• Evaluate the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of biomedical equipment
• Train clinicians and other personnel on the proper use of biomedical equipment
• Research the engineering aspects of the biological systems of humans and animals with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists
• Prepare procedures, write technical reports, publish research papers, and make recommendations based on their research findings
• Present research findings to scientists, nonscientist executives, clinicians, hospital management, engineers, other colleagues, and the public

To seek admission in biomedical engineering, the students must pass 10+2 (Science) or higher secondary examination or equivalent with Physics, Chemisry, Biology along with Mathematics.

There are primarily two degrees that you can pursue for Biomedical Engineering.

• 1. BE Biomedical Engineering
• 2. B Tech Biomedical Engineering

B.E. Biomedical Engineering is a 4-year UG course with a specialization in the field of biomedical and related aspects. The minimum eligibility criterion which most of the institutes ask for is a score of at least 50% (relaxable for reserved category candidates) at 10+2 or equivalent level.

B.Tech in Bio-Medical Engineering (B.Tech BME) is an undergraduate course of engineering practices and design in medical and healthcare business. The minimum eligibility for this course requires passing class 12th/ Higher Secondary Examination Biology, Maths with a minimum of 50% marks.

There are many ways of admission. Many colleges accept JEE main scores and UPSEE results. Many other colleges have their own entrance tests.

It is important to study maths as compared to biology in terms of subjects. Many private colleges are a bit relaxed on this, as PCB students get admission in Biomedical Engineering. Examples are SRM University and Ramachandra University.

One other way to pursue Biomedical Engineering through PCB is – do a bridge course in Biomedical engineering after completing MBBS.

B.E. Biomedical Engineering: Eligibility. Candidate must have passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized state or central board with at least 50% (40% to 45% for reserved category candidates) of the marks with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology as the major subjects of study.
