To be honest my friend it's a very difficult task.

Doable but very difficult and very rare.

Now before you jump on the IIT bandwagon, only a fraction of people at the IITs get placed with a whopping package of 65LPA, 1CR, 2.25CR, etc. Here's where you go wrong, these packages are offered in dollars, they'd be staying and working outside India and they'd be spending the money on dollars. So it's pointless converting it into rupees.

Now let's be realistic, you'll read about a student from an average college making it big but these are rarer than the IITians. Why? Because an average engg college student is at a disadvantage.

An average college doesn't have the smartest crowd like the IITs. Talking about CSE/IT an average college might not even have coding culture to begin with. Couple that with infrastructure bottleneck and curriculum, you'll see where this is heading.

An IITian will have better opportunities, more extra curricular activities to do during their BTech, top notch professors who would help with your projects and you have the best resources to study.

In an average college, most of your time will be spent writing unproductive assignments which nobody bothers to verify among an average peer group who's not interested in engineering but came in just for the sake of degree. IITs don't have this, sure they have assignments but not shitloads of them making you sweat because quantity is preferred over quality.

In short, you have to keep a very excellent skillset and resume for the companies to offer you a big package. Only a few people manage to bag them, almost all of them started early and built their robust profile with some advantage over others.

In an average college, you have to figure everything out on your own unless you're really lucky to have someone mentor you. Hence I said, you don't have this advantage and it's difficult to make it big immediately after graduation. You'll likely have to struggle for a few years at a lower salary before you land in those fat paychecks :)

Hi,

See its not the tag of the college on an engineer but his or her capabilities. It might happen that an iitian become a vendor and a normal college student become a good earner. So its all the luck and the hardwork that pays off. All the best!

Hi Ashu,

It is a proven fact that knowledge is power and so is the case with IITians as they are in a position to get better jobs because they have proven their worth and that's why they are in an IIT. Also, the companies that visit for placements offer better job roles to them as compared to any private college because of the brand value of IITs.

However, sometimes if you are able to prove your worth even in a private college in terms of your knowledge and are able to impress the corporates then you may land up in a better job than your peers but the kind of job role that you will get along with the benefits will depend on the college from which you will pursue engineering. For example- BITS Pilani is a private college still people bag jobs which are many a time better than IIT jobs hence it is completely dependent upon the private college you get into.

Hope it helps.

Good Luck!
