It will be difficult for someone with average academic background to get IIM B or A, but definitely not impossible. Try to secure exceptional percentile to negate average academic records.
All the best!
IIM A gives weightage to different academic and work experience parameter with scores. And sum of all those needs to cross a min score set by IIM A in order to make you eligible for interview round and of course apart from that your percentile involved which on seeing last few years trends should be atleast above 99.67.
If you are not able to clear the min score criteria set by IIM A then even with high percentile you won't be called for interview. One of my friend with a 99.83 percentile failed to pass min criteria by 0.5 marks and wasn't called for interview both in IIM A and B.
In IIM B it is further more complicated procedure as it gives way more weightage to quality work experience. Also it calls freshers with their a little less percentile who are like stars in 10th and 12th with above 97% in both class. So it's way too complicated. But we can surely say until and unless you have a high quality work experience which covers up your academic default then you won't get a chance in IIM B.
In short it's very very hard to get a chance for interview process in both IIM A and B with average academic background. If in case you get a chance then you can definitely cover it up by performing well in interview and essay writing part as they have high weightage in final aggregate score which generates the list for selection.
All the best for all your preparations!!
