He was earning around $20 million per year in 2021 dollars ($10 million in the 1980s) by performing a massive number of cutting-edge open heart surgeries in an assembly line fashion in the 1980s. He had some junior surgeons open and close to increase his throughput, allowing him to perform 75,000 open heart operations per person, a record.
