can any one explain me what is cutoff. percentile. ranking .can any tell me...
Hi.
So assuming you gave a competitive examination, whether it is national or state. There are a certain technicalities defined with it. Also such exams are en entry passage to course or institute of your choice, for which COUNSELLING is held for the candidates who gave and qualified in the exam.
Lets assume the exam was of 300 marks and you bagged 140 marks. Now based on your marks you will be assigned a RANK and PERCENTILE.
Now,
CUTOFF: Minimum marks required to be considered as 'qualified' in the examination and take part in counselling. Cutoff marks or Cutoff rank are the barrier above which candidate is considered qualified. So if the exam has a cutoff marks of 72 and you have got 140 then you are qualified.
PERCENTILE: Percentile is the percentage of students that have got marks BELOW THAN YOURS. Example, with 140 marks you get a percentile of 98% that means that 98% of the students who gave examination are below you. DO NOT CONFUSE IT WITH PERCENTAGE.
RANKING: Depending on how many students gave the examination, and your percentile you will be given an ALL INDIA RANK (AIR) if it was national level competition or a STATE RANK if it was a state exam and those ranks decide (through counselling) if you could get into the college or not.
If you have a further specific query please feel free to comment.
Best of Luck.

Hello,
Cut off point is the mark laid down by the authority or board conducting an exam, which is considered to be the level of passing or clearing the exam. For the further phases of the selection process, short listings are based on cut-off applicants. Rank refers to the position where you laid in the hierarchy. The percentile generally means that it falls below the percentile by a certain amount. If you score in the 25th percentile, for instance, then 25 percent of the test takers are all below your score. 25 is referred to as the percentile rank
