You can try GRE anytime but I advise you to give it a shot in the second year. Settle yourself first and then be focused rather than jumping into it out of excitement.

yes you can appear for gre examination. it doesnot have any minimum eligibility requirement. but there should be a minimum of 21 days of gap if you repeat the examination.

As there is no minimum eligibility requirement for GRE , you may give the GRE if you are in the 1st year of your B.Tech.
The only problem you would face is during the application process to colleges in and after your final year of B.Tech. The GRE score is valid for 5 years after which you will have to retake the exam as your previous scores will have expired. Therefore, it is best to take the exam after your second year or third year so that you can utilize the scores to their maximum potential. If you give the exam in the first year, the scores will only be valid for one year after your BTech graduation and you may have to sit for the examination again if you delay the application process for your post graduate education.
