I believe you are referring to the District Magistrate (DM) Position as we all know. You need to be an IAS Officer to be positioned as a DM/DC/Collector in that respective District and look after the administrative well being of the Constituencies under the District. Judicial Magistrate,District Magistrate, District Judicial Magistrate, Special Magistrate are other positions under the Legal Arm of the District, and you need to clear the respective Judicial Exam for this.

After clearing the judiciary exams for the lower level the applicants get placed as district magistrate , additional district magistrate , 'munsiff', or as a district court judge .
