Biomedical Engineering, also referred to as Bioengineering, BioMed or BME, is a multidisciplinary STEM field that combines biology and engineering, applying engineering principles and materials to medicine and healthcare.

The increasing demand for Biomedical Engineers is linked to society’s general shift towards everyday utilisation of machinery and technology in all aspects of life. The combination of engineering principles with biological knowledge to address medical needs has contributed to the development of revolutionary and life-saving concepts such as Artificial organs, Surgical robots, Advanced prosthetics, New pharmaceutical drugs and Kidney dialysis.

Biomedical Engineering is a broad field with different areas of focus, and the exact nature of the work you can find yourself doing will vary depending on the specifics of your role. A few examples of some of the subdivisions of Biomedical Engineering include:

· Biomedical Electronics

· Biomaterials

· Computational Biology

· Cellular, Tissue and Genetic Engineering

· Medical Imaging

· Orthopaedic Bioengineering

· Bionanotechnology

SCOPE OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

According to the reports, there will be a surge in the demand for biomedical engineers and it is predicted to rise to 23 percent between 2014 to 2024. Today, people who are facing problems related to knee or hips are even opting for replacement procedures. In the past, some of the medical tests were quite painful. However, biomedical engineers work are working towards developing technology that is less painful for patients. Every day new ways are devised to do blood tests, screening for infectious diseases and in genetics. Today, we see a surge in heart and kidney ailments as well as problems related to joints. In order to overcome these, bioengineers are involved in the designing and construction of devices such as cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, artificial kidneys, blood oxygenators, prosthetic hearts, and joints.
