After graduation with English(Hons), you have to complete your master's degree in the same subject, you can appear for UGC NET exam regarding this, eligibility criteria for this is passed master's degree in the relevant discipline from a recognized university with 55% aggregate, in case of reserved category there is relaxation of 5%, qualifying UGC NET will allow you to pursue higher studies,  in many universities where admission to PhD is done through entrance exam, candidates who qualify UGC NET exam are exempted from appearing in the entrance test conducted by the concerned University, also you can teach in University level if you qualify UGC NET, you can also appear for state level SET.
