Yes you can prepare by yourself without joining coaching institutes. I would like to share certain points where you should be careful:
1) Getting the idea of competition : while going to coaching class , you would be studying with many other children like you. There would be some students doing better than you and some below you. While being there you would be hearing about their friends , brothers or someone getting a very good college, you would be discussing about what is important what is not , what chapters you can study and what can be studied in end etc. You would also have the idea of competition out there. While preparing by yourself , you should join any all india online test series , there would be many many students giving that exam , after giving the exam you would know where you stand and how much more you need to improve.
2) Questions discussion : while going to institutes , you would discuss your homework problems and questions you have done with friends , you would come to know more about how elese you could solve the question. But while preparing yourself , you might get some people for discussion but not a group as institutes. So try to give some extra time to few questions and see how else you could solve them and would you be getting the right answer if you solve them that way.
3) Not letting yourself get upset : JEE is a big exam , while preparing for it you might feel sometimes that you can't do it , or you are not able to do any question and it's not your cup of tea and all. But remove all those thoughts . Where ever you are facing problem , analyse them and solve them. Everybody preparing for JEE have their ups and downs and it's a part of the preparation , the way you conquer it will make you way better in the subjects.
4) Keeping regularity : while going to coaching institutes , you would be going there 3 times on week days or 2 times on week ends and all. So you would be studying something always and also you would know how much is done and how much more is to be done. But while sitting at home , you might get lazy that 'I will do this chapter / questions later'. But you shouldn't do that in any case! Whenever you feel like not studying , remember why in first place you want a good college and then study. Nothing is better than regularity in studying.
5) Tests : while going to institutes there might be tests every week or month to keep checking yourself . But while preparing by yourself you won't have that . I would suggest you to take online test series, so that you keep checking yourself and know how much more you need to study.
These are some points you need to take care for while preparing by yourself. Keep 2-3 friends with you who are preparing seriously for the same so that you can discuss your doubts. You might get things online but discussing with friends would be better.
Keep studying and practicing questions regularly on daily basis . Follow the time table made for yourself strictly. Keep your concepts clear as you progress further. Always keep time for revision . Revise everything including the questions you have done. Mark the questions which you couldn't get at once and revise them
Doing all by yourself has many advantages too , if you aren't performing well in exams initially , you won't feel down seeing others. You won't have big friends group so won't be disturbed. You would be self dependent and that is the first and most important thing to crack any competitive exam.
Give your 100% and you will shine .
All the best
