Hi Akanksha,
Psychiatry is becoming very popular these days and has good career prospect. One can start a career by pursuing BA and MA in psychology after class 12th. For MBBS students who want to do specialisation in psychology may take MD psychiatry which is a three year course. You can also start a career in psychiatry by doing a Diploma which is a two year course. For DPM i.e Diploma in Psychiatry Medicine it is essential to do any medical course. A minimum score to qualify the criteria will do.
You can pursue DPM even after doing Bachelor in Physiotherapy. This will help in better understanding of the course and the various medical strategies used in dealing with the psychiatric issues of the patients. There are many institutes which are offering the DPM course in India and abroad. One must have good knowledge of human psychology, both physiology and anatomy of brain, neurosciences, social behavior and medicines to understand this subject better.
A career in DPM is evolving and having good value to it. As we have heard that a major population all over the world is going through mental health issues during this COVID situation. Therefore, to take up a course of this nature is highly appreciable and socially giving. There will be more technological advancements and this will keep increasing the stress among the people. Many people find it hard to cope with such situations and want to seek professional help. Being a psychiatrist becomes the moral duty of such professionals to help their patients and make world a better happy place to live.
Psychiatrists are placed in hospitals, private clinics, nursing homes, heath centres research institutes, medical colleges and schools. They are paid quite well similar to other medical professionals.
So, please go ahead with your career plan and serve humanity!
